Even Jesus Grieved! Aug. 2 Sermon
Practices to Process Loss and Grief
Pastor Kelsey shared about the importance of processing grief in her sermon. One of the ways we can do that is to spend intentional time acknowledging it through spiritual practices. The main thing that helps to process grief is in meaning making and legacy making. The big questions are: How will you remember this time, that person, or that thing? What will you want to remember? Or how can you honor this time, that person, or that thing?
We all find different types of practices more helpful than others, so here are some options:
Praying in color
(prayer through doodling)
Daily Ignatian Examen
Journal about what this time is like or what you are feeling
Write a letter to the person you have lost that you won't send (whether or not they are alive)
Go for a mindful nature walk, giving yourself space to reflect
Read a book that was special to the deceased
Read a book that speaks to the specific loss you are experiencing
Read a book that is a comfort to you!
Share about the loss with a trusted friend, listen to their loss in return
Create art or craft something to remember the person or event by
Eat a special meal
Create a photo album
Pastor Kelsey is here to talk through a loss with you or to help you figure out what could be a helpful practice for you!
"Finding Peace in an Anxious World" Book Study
Join fellow church members for a book study based on "Finding Peace in an Anxious World." Start Date: Week of Sept. 13th Book Cost: $11 paper copy, $6 kindle version If in person, we would meet someplace outside like Common Ground. If online we would use a facebook group to share the resources and have some discussion then have a 30 min zoom meeting to talk about it together.
I'm interested, but not sure yet.
I would only do it if we meet in-person outside
I would only do it if it is online
I would be a part of it no matter how it is hosted
I just want the book, I don't want to be a part of the group study part
“Finding Peace in an Anxious World” uses the book of Proverbs and "The Serenity Prayer" as a guide to help Christians find their way through anxiety, worry, and fear and move towards God's peace that surpasses all understanding.
The book is written by Urban Village Church, Chicago, based on a four-part sermon series they did on “The Serenity Prayer” in 2015. It was through that series that the church was able to address the tumultuous events of that summer and present a framework for how to approach a God who desires peace for the hearts of God’s people in times of anxiety.
The four chapters, each written by a different UVC leader, focus on different aspects of the prayer—serenity, acceptance, courage, and wisdom—and each concludes with a spiritual practice to help further develop the featured characteristic in your life so that we can be rooted in God and energized to live fully as Disciples of Christ.
Background to the Sermon
The video and links below give a peak into part of what Pastor Kelsey discussed in the sermon. It is not required to understand the sermon, but may help you mull it over.
If you would rather read, here is an article that also gives some background to the sermon topic:
"4 Types of Grief Nobody Told You About,"
by Sarah Epstein MFT
If this topic really interests you, the book "All Our Losses, All Our Griefs" by Herbert Anderson and Kenneth R. Mitchell is a short read and outlines the types of grief and some ways to address them.
